Disability Civility

The word ‘disabled’ has mislabeled those individuals who have unique circumstances. In actuality, these individuals possess an enviable amount of character, capabilities, potential. Most people agree with this observation, but struggle to interact with individuals with disabilities. People’s empathetic feelings towards the individual’s situation inhibit themselves from acting normally. People become uncomfortable because they act in an unfamiliar manner trying to accommodate to the individual and their needs.

Luann understands this conflict in which people respect those with disabilities but lack the training and experience to know how to act. She has associated with individuals and their specific accommodations for most of her life, which as lead to her building strong, close relationships with these individuals.
